Shaye has reached the age where, if she asks a question, we really give it a shot to give her a good answer, because there is a fairly decent chance she will understand. We’re never sure how she will take something, but figure that it’s at least worth trying. I had one such moment when she was helping me crumble cornbread and biscuits for our Thanksgiving dressing (have I ever mentioned that I prefer to do things ahead of time?).
She asked me when we were going to eat the biscuits. I told her they are for a recipe that we will make for Thanksgiving on Thursday. She asked what Thanksgiving was. I attempted to explain something about how we will have a big meal with people that we love and are thankful for, and we will all take that time to talk about some things that are glad we have in our life. Just to see if the point had made it home, I asked “What are some things you are thankful for?”
Ok, pause here a second: what would kids usually say before age 3? Special treats? Toys? Dancing?
Not my daughter. She proceeded to blow me away by responding, “God, and people who are fun.” (Yes, really.) I told her how good those things are and that we are very thankful for them. Then she decided to add, “And that we love each other.”
I was a puddle on the floor. It was a really, REALLY good mommy moment. I think she gets it better than I do, most days.
